Just how long does it take a user to decide whether or not it’s worth it to stay on your site or leave for a competitor’s? One day? An hour? A minute? You might be shocked that the answer is really…. 10 seconds.   

That’s it, you’ve only got 10 seconds to get your point across to your customers, less time than it takes to clip your nails, less time than it takes to send an email, less time than it takes to put on your socks.

First impressions are everything and in that short amount of time most users checking out your site have already evaluated your business and decided whether it’s worth their time to stay on your site or move to the next.

If your homepage isn’t engaging, it doesn’t matter how great the remainder of the site is because there won’t be any users reading it.


The Fix

In order to win over users in those 10 seconds you’ve got clearly identify who you are and the value and services you provide your customers and frame it in an engaging and informative way.

In the event that users like what they see, they’ll stay, providing you a higher chance to transform them into clients.

That’s enough to capture my attention and keep me interested to learn more. If you want to emulate similar results it’d be smart to take Skype’s existing layout and tailor it to your industry and service.


Responsive Design

Just several years ago, mobile users were worth significantly less than their desktop equivalent. They converted less often and spent less cash when they did.

Nowadays, nonetheless, things have changed, there’s a revolution taking place by which mobile-first users are consistently taking action on websites.

Over 60 percent of people in the US now own a smartphone and for over half of them their smartphone is their primary point of contact with the internet.

Websites that don’t keep up with mobile responsiveness will likely be left out in the future and are already beginning to get fazed out by competitors sites.

A mobile-version site (also known as an m-Dot  site) is essentially a duplicate of your site specifically made for smaller display screens; it’ll look exactly the same as the desktop site. Creating a mobile-version site was once the preferred method to solve this issue, but it’s gradually being replaced by a new alternative: responsive design.

The more recent approach (also the one we’re using at West Hartford Web Solutions) utilizes a framework that is responsive which allows your site to regulate it’s rendering based upon the screen it’s displayed on.

The main difference between the two is; mobile-version sites are designed for specific screen sizes while a responsive website automatically optimizes itself depending on the screen it’s being viewed on. For example if the site is being displayed on a television the site will be scaled up and if viewed on a smartphone everything will shrink down.



Design elements are only the tip of iceberg when it comes to features that can undermine your website. As Internet accesses becomes more ingrained into our daily lives, people continue to expect a better and more fluid user experience along with lighting-fast load times. The better technology gets so do our expectations. Which translates to an increased penalty for not having quick load times.


The Fix

So how exactly should you go about enhancing your websites’ performance? The easiest answer is into invest in good server technology.

What’s this going to cost me? Good hosting is obviously going to cost more and hosting is something you CAN save money on, but it’s definitely NOT something you should do.
